Role of an Heirloom Custodian

    • Items designated “family heirlooms” were given to my father by either my grandmother or great grandmother. These heirlooms have been handed down from the ancestors and descendants of Col. Francis and Henrietta Porter of Beverly, Massachusetts.

My father did not consider himself to be an “owner” but rather an “Heirloom Custodian” of a valuable piece of family history, and is thus tasked with the responsibility of preserving the lineage and heritage of the heirloom (which he did not consider as personal property)

      As Heirloom Custodian, my father:
      • expected the heirloom would be passed down to other family members, retaining all documentation of its original lineage. He expected these heirloom items would never to be sold to the general public (although they may be given to public museums on loan should this be considered the best means of preservation of the heirloom).
      • considered that he had a fiduciary responsibility to the family’s ancestors and descendants to ensure the heirloom was protected, cherished, and preserved for future generations.
